we were shocked at this news last Feb. I was going to come to Lanark for the service, however, a bad storm set in here in Smithville and well, I was stopped before I could get started. Ray Donaldson was one of the finest pickers I have ever had the pleasure to have in my shows. After a show we did at the Markham Fair, Sept 2007, in the arena, Ray surely did like to 'eat'. He loaded up on the sandwiches and anything we got as part of our show. That man surely could 'eat'! hahahaha. I was so glad another dear friend, Leanne Nisbit contacted us to let us know ... I still have the email she sent me; Feb 6/13. I am so thankful for her sending me that news. She was also a pleasure to have work with me. Leanne & Ray were such a great tandem combo and I was always thrilled with them both. I still have Ray's email ID in my address book; I will not erase it! I hope Feryn & the family are doing well & we send them GOD'S blessings & our love. We think of them all, often. GOD Bless to ev'ryone out there that's thinking of Feryn & the family ... & especially Ray ... what a great player and friend. He is sadly missed, but never far from our minds & hearts. He will always be on stage with me when I perform! ... GOD Bless ya Ray ... I bet you & Mr CASH & Luther are pickin' just fine up yonder in Heaven ... and Marshall is there too! "WILL THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN" ... no way! GOD Bless to All ... Randy & Suzanne

The Good Neighbour
Hi Fern and Family,
It was with a sad heart that I heard the news of Raymie's passing.
When we moved to Lanark in 1962, we didn't know many people, but one of the best neighbours we could have was when you eventually moved into your house on George St. Dad was always taking his cars to Raymie to be fixed and painted...with 3 boys wanting to drive Wilmer's car there were often fenders to be fixed!! Regardless of what needed to be done or the time frame in which it was needed, Raymie would always say,"Just leave it with me Wilmer and I'll fit it in somewhere." He never said no and the car was always ready on time and looking like new.
Aside from expertly patching up cars, Raymie was always at the rink or the ball park, and gave many, many hours of his time to the community. I never had him as a coach, but Blaine and Brett did. He was always kind, understanding and fair...with whoever he dealt with. I never heard Raymie speak angrily or unkindly about anyone...he was consistently an all around GOOD GUY!!
The world needs more men like Raymie, and I know how much he will be remembered and missed. I know he will be looking down kindly on us all as he plays his guitar and enjoys making the music he so loved.
All the best, Blair, Blaine, Brett and Margaret

But little did he know that he was my favorite "one of the best"

The problem solver.........
Raymie was the person folks would go to with a problem to solve or fix.
My cousin Tom and I decided to try some white water canoeing one warm lazy summer day.
I knew of a place that had just received a shipment of new aluminum canoes, so off we went to see if we could rent one.
With the addition of essential provisions, we put in at Joe’s Lake on the Mississippi River. Now the next part was similar to the white water scene from Deliverance. Without going into the details… you can imagine our canoe as a crushed up beer can.
No problem said I, my cousin Raymie can fix that up.
As Tom recalls, "Raymie looked at us like we were a couple of yahoos”.
While we nervously paced back and forth outside, we could hear the pounding of metal and whirring - zipping noise of the rivet gun (no cursing though).
Once the noise subdued we ventured in to see that the twisted crushed tin can had been transformed back into its original shape.
"I can’t fix the scratches, but she’ll float”, he said.
As you would expect, he wouldn’t accept money and he didn’t pass judgment on our misfortune.
He only gave some us some common sense advice.
"Boys …just stick to the lake … the shoreline of the lake next time”.
Off we went to return the canoe as well as some compensation and this was certainly better than returning a twisted and crushed chunk of aluminum.
Thanks again Raymie.

My Other Father
So-o sad we lost another admirable friend and musician. Raymee Donaldson. My 'other' father for all of my youth.
I remember being about 10 yrs old, many times, sitting with my ear tight against the sunporch window screen at my house, straining not to miss a note when he was practicing guitar next door at his home. Later when I was about 14 and learned a few chords, he allowed me to plug in his amp in the basement and play his electric, on Wed when he and Feryn went bowling. I was so thrilled! Had no guitar of my own, at the time. He and his wonderful family sure left me with a life- long treasure... their love.

Meeting Raymie
Around 6 or 8 years ago I attended the annual fiddle service at the United Church in Lanark. As a fan of the flat-picking guitar style I picked up on the guitar accompaniment of one particular guitarist in the group, and made a point of going "back-stage" after the service to meet him. I asked about his guitar-playing, and he mentioned that his first instrument was actually the pedal steel guitar. We chatted about guitars etc., and he mentioned (proudly) that he owned a Fender guitar (telly or strat - I can't remember which) that had been autographed by Luther Perkins (early guitarist for Johnie Cash). Since that time my family has made many trips to Perth, and this past summer we retired and moved here. I had hoped to get to see Raymie again, but, sadly, did not.
Rest in Peace, Raymie

One of a Kind
Raymond was a one of a kind man and it is heartbreaking to see him depart so soon. He wore his passion for music, family and life on his sleeve and he will forever be remembered for those values. He was a great role model for anyone who met him as well as Feryn. It is difficult to find such loving couples these days such as Raymond and Feryn. Your tune will forever play on Raymond; You will be heartly missed.
