Obituary of Allan Clarence Rae
Rae, Allan C.
Allan Clarence Rae passed away peacefully at Briargate Lodge, Amherstview, ON with his wife Aurea of 61 years and family by his side on Monday, March 25, 2013, at the age of 88. Al was born in Hamilton on April 19, 1924, the second of four children born to Vera and Clare Rae.
Al graduated from McGill (Civil Engineering ’48). While a student, he worked summers for the Geodetic Survey mapping the Arctic and was very proud of the large number of points he recorded. He participated in the Arctic Survival Course to develop survival kits for the war and often spoke of the experience. He was later inducted into McGill’s Sports Hall of Fame for his involvement with the winning Redmen Hockey team of 1945-46. After graduation he worked for Kraft Foods helping engineer the machinery for sliced cheese. He was one of the original 20 employees who helped to build Petrofina Canada, and worked there until the company was taken over by PetroCanada in 1981. Al retired from PetroCanada as the General Manager-Marketing, Eastern Canada. After retirement he was involved in the formation of Superline Fuels and served on their board. He resided in Kingston, Ontario and Daytona Beach, Florida, enjoying the beach, golf and travelling extensively with his wife, Aurea.
Beloved husband and best friend of Aurea (nee Kelly). Loving father of Patricia (late A. William) Ross of Daytona Beach, James (Mireille Gourdeau) Rae of Montreal, Peter (Donna) Rae of Kingston, Tom (Pat) Rae of Daytona Beach, Charles Rae of Kingston and Michael Rae of Montreal. Proud grandfather of ten and great-grandfather of 6 children. Al is predeceased by his parents Clare and Vera (nee Stewart), brother William who died as a child and his sister Jeanne Harding. Allan is survived by his sister Eleanor Lawrence of Comox, BC. Family and friends gathered to celebrate Al’s life at the Blair & Son Funeral Home, Smiths Falls on Saturday, March 30, 2013 with Interment following at St. Francis de Sales Cemetery. If desired, donations to the Salvation Army would be appreciated by the family.
