To have known a teacher and friend who was so kind and generous to those he worked with and taught (and their extended families)...I can only imagine the man of honour he was to his own family. My daughter Maeve and I met Mr. D when she started JK at St. James. Many years of being Mr. D's helper to set up for assemblies, put out recycling or just chat about their days, has left a Mr. D-sized hole in Maeve's heart...but when I asked her what she thought he might be doing in heaven, she simply responded "probably fixing God's computer." We grieve this massive loss with our SJ & SF school families. May God bless his cherished loved ones.

Dan was an amazing man, friend, teacher...he would always go out of his way to help out, anyone, anytime. No matter how difficult a day may be, Dan always found a silver lining and never complained about anything or anyone. Dan is the perfect example for all of us; he lived the life that Jesus showed us. He IS the Catholic virtues we teach the students, he led by example. There are not enough words to fully explain how much we will miss Dan. Our hearts are broken. We can take comfort in the fact, that as we always teased, "Dan, you're going straight to Heaven!" We just never thought it would be this soon. We pray for your wonderful family, Dan, you were so proud of them. We already miss you.

Our family is heartbroken at the loss of such a wonderful man! He was so kind to my children when they were at St. James and currently at St.Francis--I've seen and heard too many stories to count of his generosity and time he has given to the church /school and community. I considered him a friend and he always had such kind words for me. I took the time and am grateful to tell him how much I appreciated all the work he had done for the church and we discussed all the issues and he said "it's like the loaves and fishes Gina--I just work with what I have" He will be greatly missed. RIP dear Dan--definitely one of the nicest people I have met and my condolences to the family.xoGina

I met Dan in 1978 or 79 and was always lifted up by his sense of humor, love of God and his true friendship. He stood by when I first got married, then he got married to you Cathryn and then even after the years took us down different paths, we all met again in Smiths Falls. I wish we had spent more time together before I moved here to Nova Scotia but we cannot change the past, only the future. Even so I will always remember him for the joy and love he shared and for always bringing asmile to my face. God bless you Cathryn, Heather, Liam,Peter and Daniel and may He be with you and comfort you in this time of sorrow. Love Joanna

He spoke about the children in our schools like they were his own; he was so very proud of all of them and spoke about each student with such love. Thank you, Dan for being such a good example to all of us of how a life can be lived fully with kindness and joy.

Lynda Daniluk posted a condolence
To lose a loved one means you no longer can look forward to their warm embrace or the sound of their voice as they greet you or share their stories and thoughts. All that is left are tears, memories, some pictures and words. So hard to take solace in these things and yet, it is precisely from these that our solace comes for we can guard them and go back to them when we need to. I hope these few words will provide something of that to Dan's wonderful family.
A person who is good, who is loved, who is all the things we all should aspire to be, is a treasure and it is because of people like this that we feel loved, respected and our endeavours worthwhile. When someone accomplishes this affect in their life, tears flow from the eyes of many, memories flood through our minds, pictures are frantically gathered and words of praise and sadness are heard throughout the community. Dan was such a man. A man for whom the concept of "that can't be done” didn't seem to exist in his "theatre” life which is how I came to know him. He didn't just accomplish what was needed, he saw what was needed and did all in his power to assure that it no longer was. I have heard and seen the words that have been shared over the last few days and they bear out, in so many ways, how I saw Dan. While his Cathryn has helped out at our theatre for several years, fairly recently Dan became more involved along with their son, Peter. And when I say involved, that doesn't half cover it. Dan took on and took over tasks that in his words, wouldn't be as good as others had done because he was just "learning”, from set building to acquiring technology tools, we either badly needed or were on our "wish” list. Well if this was Dan "just learning” you would never have known it. He performed what he liked to call "rough magic” time after time after time. We need a "fire escape” for a play? No problem, Dan had a solution. We needed a new set of stairs, no problem, Dan had a solution. Everything he touched contained his special brand of "magic”, his unique sense of "know how”. It mattered not that he had not done something before, he seemed to love any new challenge thrown at him and he mastered it with grace, competence and his special brand of humour. A man such as this will live on in our hearts and minds forever. For my part, I still can't comprehend I will not see him there soon, sporting his specially equipped drill, with the magnets he installed to hold the anticipated screws he would use to put our set together! He will not be offering the little sweets he'd bring to our set building sessions. He will not be sending me anymore "rough magic” updates! But I will keep these memories safe for he was special. More than that he was my friend, a friend that will live forever in my heart. Thanks Dan for all that you were and gave, you are now officially the angel I often often dubbed you when thanking you for all that you did for me and our theatre.
Love and condolences,
Lynda Daniluk and her family

Dan was truly one of the good ones. He was such a kind, caring and generous person. If you even just mentioned in passing that you needed or wanted something, Dan would find a way to make it happen. A very quiet, 'behind the scenes' way, but you could be sure it was Dan. I don't think I ever heard him complain about anything and if anyone around him was, he was always able to find something positive to say, that little silver lining or just another perspective, without ever making anyone feel bad. Dan was always willing to give of himself...to the school, his class, the church and his community. Anyone who has been touched by Dan is very lucky to have known him. He will forever be missed in the halls of St. Francis...rest in peace Dan.

Dear Cathryn, We were so shocked and saddened to hear that Dan passed away. Someone said to me, "was Dan a friend of yours", and I replied, "I knew him from church, and I knew him well enough to know I'll miss him!". Dan was a great ambassador at our church - always involving his class in different activities there... always helping at council level... always there with the Knights, offering help. I don't think I knew a more "solutions-focused" or optimistic guy! Dan knew how to make other people feel cared for and I am truly saddened by his passing. I can only imagine the pain you and your family are going through. Please know you are in our prayers. God Bless you. (P.S. I downloaded the photo I took at the 2011 Parish auction dinner - but now I see it may be the same as the one on this site...please do e-mail me if you want the original jpg of it.)

Catherine and children,
it is a sad occasion indeed, to be sending my sympathies to you on the death of your beloved Dan. Although time has passed since the times we shared in parish life and community, warm memories come flooding back to me of those quality moments shared. It was Dan, after all, who told me of the pearl and the oyster, more specifically , of how the grain of sand in its irritation became the pearl; a story I never forgot and one that had an influence on my journey. For a man of few words, his words were those of wisdom from a faith-filled man.
May you all find some comfort in knowing that many hearts are united with you at this sorrowful time.
Many blessings,

Janet and I knew Dan at some distance, first as "that guy" who had kept our dear friend Cathryn in Ontario. The time we were able to spend with him helped us understand what Cathryn had discovered in him.
Dan was the sort of person who moved between different modes of conversation with great ease, with a ready laugh. I appreciated his depth of knowledge of his own faith. It's one thing to have "answers", it is another to process questions about your faith with an even-handed calmness. I remember how he would address more obscure points with a little smile.
One incident involving Dan came to my mind a couple weeks ago, before we heard this news. I don't know why, it just did. Some years ago J and I were house-sitting for a friend. Cathryn and Dan were visiting BC, and they came over. The home had blackberries underneath the living room windows, and birds loved to get in there and feast. One of those birds, perhaps a bit drunk on fruit, came in the window and started circling around the room. This caused a lot of commotion amongst the humans, scaring the bird, who started pooping purple stains on everything. Panic! The bird ran into something and was stunned for a moment. Dan was there in a moment - gently holding it snug, one hand over the other, so that it was quite still. He held it there for us all to admire for a moment, and I remember the sense of calm that came over all of us, including that little bird. Then Dan stepped outside, lifted up his hands and released it into the evening sky.
Goodbye Dan, you are in good hands.

I used to see Dan everywhere--at the REAL store--at the school --he popped up everywhere! And we always had lovely conversations--our last one was about how all the good guys have to go young and how about the rotten ones that get to live forevor! but i have been meaning to write you and I was glad for this year anniversary to tell you I think he went straight to heaven as I dreamt of him the day after he died --he was working away in my dream and he looked at me and he said "Gina I am already working hard over here to make your life better" well I think my life is great as I am blessed with beautiful family but I can say in the last year my life did get better. At the point I left Dan (or he left us) I was headed back to my own United Church and I have brought them back Sunday school but as the way things go I definitely do both the catholic and united--it's my life and that's the way I choose to do it. One God anyway:)) Maybe Dan was a guardian angel and I didn't know it--it seems special to me that he would say that to me in a dream. Hope you catherine and the kids are doing well and I think of Dan often. sincerely, gina m. Brady

Also computers - tearing them apart to see the pieces inside and he liked to build them too. The science classes and first time we did a science fair. Many great memories from cubs with camping and learning survival lessons and playing basketball. He organized and took part in many events in town, he did the Knights of Columbus free-throw contest. Also I would see him at the Lombardy Relay for Life year after year in his Knights of Columbus uniform. We would always have a little chat and catch up. Also many times would see Dan out biking with his family or biking to work.
Thoughts are with the Davidson family in this time, I know Dan will always be there watching from Heaven.

Saddened to hear of the passing of Dan. He was a compassionate man who was always willing to help others. The kind of teacher that you felt fortunate to have teach your children. Nicole & Brock have many fond memories of "Mr. D"

A True Disciple of Jesus
I was shocked to hear of Dan's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. I taught with Dan at St. James the Greater. Dan was a kind, wonderful man, an exemplary teacher, a shining star for others to follow. He always had time to lend a helping hand, to listen and to be supportive when needed. Dan was a good friend to everyone he met. Dan was a true disciple of Jesus. He will be truly missed.

The Best
I worked with Dan from the IT side of things in the school. Dan was the Information Technology (IT) site administrator for the school and he always had he best interest of the students in mind. Dan was always ready to help in anyway he could to get problems solved. Dan's presence will be greatly missed by all. To the Davidson family please accept my deepest sympathy. You will be in my prayers.
Sincerely;
Roger Stark

Great Helper
Dan was a great helper building sets for for theatre. I considered it a real compliment when he said "how would Bill do it?" after he built the sets over the winter when I wasn't here. I was looking forward to working on "Pollyanna" with him. I am sure that both of us would have been challenged. He will be missed by all at the theatre.

My teacher Mr. D
Hello Davidson family i'm terrible sorry for the loss of Mr.Davidson. He was one of the best teachers I had. I had him for grade 3 at St.James and grade 5 at St.Francis, I will always remember how patient he was when I didn't understand something and would always make sure I did. He loved his family and was always telling stories. He was a wonderful person and will be very missed!! I wish I could attened the wake, but please know you will be in my thoughts and prayers.
Sincerely, Madison Allan
