Dear Beth, Allison, Sylvia and family
As a neighbour and friend for 26 years we are truly saddened by your loss of Tom. When we moved to the Pines your family was one of the first we met and both Allison and Sylvia babysat Angela and Jeffrey. Tom and Beth and girls were always so kind to us always sharing your tennis and basketball courts with our children and their friends. Tom always had a smile, a kind word and always a soft spoken voice which we will miss. Not to mention the backyard chats with Allan. He was a wonderful neighbour and friend you could always depend on. We will sincerely miss him and offer our deepest condolences to all
Sincerely Diane, Allan, Angela, Jeffrey and families

Dear Beth, this is Phil McCann of Greensboro, NC and one of Tom's students and runners. I last visited with you and Tom in September 2006. Tom was a special person in my life; helping me attend PDCI in 1968 and asking me to run the EO crosscountry in the same year. It was always a treat to visit with Tom - loved running the Glen Tay Block race in 2005 and our last visit. I cheish Tom's commitment to family, fitness and living one's dreams. Unfortunately I will not be able to attend Saturday's gathering due to family commitments in Seattle. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

He and I shared a lot of time together over the years and my respect for him was always the highest. so many stories from Track and Field days and sitting around the office shooting the breeze. His personality and values and the way he related to students and athletes was an example for others to try and live up to. He will be missed and if we were not down here in South Texas know that we would be there. You are in our thoughts and we will be thinking of you and Tom for a very long time to come.

As a fairly frequent visitor to the Tobey home in the Pines over several decades, I was very saddened to learn of Tom's passing. However, I was also buoyed by Pat's recollections and anecdotes of the connections between the Tobeys and the Grahams, and of Tom's connections to the larger community. This is a great loss for all. It is also, however, a time for remembrance and thanks for the things, both tangible and intangible, that Tom contributed. I will be at the PDCI service in spirit.

Beth Barb Anna I was so surprised to hear of Tom's passing. I know that this is a very difficult time for all of you & your families. I am sorry that I did not learn of the visitation period in time to attend.
I meant him in his first year at P&DCI. I was in Grade 10 at the time.
I loved sports & enjoyed also the Academic part of it.
Tom was a great help to me to develop my athletic skills. His tips & explanations to enhance my athletic skills were clear & concise which made them so easy to understand Just like his classes
At the same time he made me aware the my grades were also important.
I know that he was well like among the student body. His name often comes up when " the lads " who were involved with sports get together.
I want to thank you for sharing him with us.

Tom and the Tobey’s Rat
Tom was always quick to lend a helping hand to a neighbour in need. There came a day when the Tobeys were in real need – they had a dirty, great rat in their garage! Tom and Paul flew into action, with lots of verbal support and dicey recommendations from the sidelines. A faux fur hassock (foot stool) was brought in from the family room. It had an open bottom, but the solid sides went right down to the floor, so it was at least part of a trap. Inside, it had coil springs. The hassock was plunked down over the cornered rat. The rat was frantic, and every time it jumped, the springs also jumped, causing the faux fur seat to jump as well. A piece of plywood was slid in under the bottom to fully enclose the rat thing, and Tom gingerly lifted the whole package and carried it carefully out to the Tobey’s convertible car. Paul got in to drive and Tom carefully kneeled backwards in the back seat, resting the jumping jack hassock, the plywood and the enclosed rodent on top of the trunk. Tom rode in this rather awkward position as Paul very slowly drove to the end of the street with all of the neighbourhood kids following along in some sort of modern version of the Pied Piper. Great care was required to avoid an early release of the rat into the car with the two men. After the rat was safely released at the end of the street, Beth quietly said "You know, it’ll probably just come back”. (As told by Pat Tobey to Bob Lorimer)

Tom, Johnny Cash and the Amphibians
Another quiet day in the Pines; a day about to be upended by that cruel Greek goddess, "Crisis”.
Tom is a Country and Western fan. More relevant to this story, however, is that he is also a Johnny Cash fan.
The phone rings at the Tobey home. On the line is Tom, singing "four feet high and rising”, quoting a little-known Johnny Cash ditty. Everyone immediately knows that the sump pump has given out, because they all know about the Graham’s sump pump, and they are also great Johnny Cash wannabes. So, it’s now all able-bodied on deck. Everyone to the scene, rubber boots in hand or on foot. Sure enough the basement is in flood and the water is rising toward the furnace. Not a good thing!
In the end, the pump is repaired, the basement is bailed out, and the house is saved. The biggest challenge in this particular case was managing the frogs that were leaping all around as the dewatering crew was working its magic. The best news is that the frogs escaped.
Good neighbours, good memories and "Crisis” thwarted again. And, that’s why there are still amphibians in the Pines to this very day.

Tom, the Chipmunk and the Livestock Chute
Tom has a soft spot for God’s small creatures – even at his peril and that of some of his closest friends.
Close your eyes and imagine yet another Pines neigbourhood call to arms. A chipmunk is trapped in the Graham’s dining room wall and is wearing itself down to nubbins trying to escape. What to do?
Neighbours to the rescue to build a master plan; a plan much larger than the small rodent involved. Believe it or not, the plan is for the assembled crew to stand along the sides of the dining room with sheets of plywood standing on their edges to create a chute from the dining room wall to the patio door for said chipmunk to run to safety once freed from its entrapment. Ok … I suppose … maybe.
The plan is conceived and is perfected, but with how much real critical review, no one is willing to say to this day.
The moment of action has arrived. The plywood crew is in position. The viewing gallery has no empty seats. The critics are already discussing their "I told you so” hindsight stories even before the hindsight is available. But, there is actually little sight at all, either foresight or hindsight, because it is late evening and the lights are down low in order to not scare the poor creature. There is no instant replay.
Tom smashes a hole in the dining room wall with a hammer. There is a long quiescence. Eventually, the problem animal ventures tentatively out from the hole in the dining room wall and bolts to freedom; presumably to then engage, after supper of course, in the activities that then create new baby chipmunks who then grow up to hang out in dining room walls.
No chipmunks were harmed during this storied event; but dining room walls in the Pines have never been the same since.
The chipmunk family says "Thanks, Tom”.

Tom's Sound Advice
I vividly remember meeting Tom ( as well as Geof Conley and Bud Peters ) shortly after moving to Smiths Falls in the early 1980's. I " bumped " into them on a noon hour run from the Smiths Falls Squash Club ( I had just started running regularly to lose weight ). Tom was keenly interested in how far and how often I was running, but more importantly, how my body felt. I told him I felt excellent, other than I was experiencing severe pains in my shins. Tom took one look at what I had on my feet and ( very politely as only Tom could do ) suggested that maybe I should look into running in something, other than a pair of steel toed construction boots. I did and have been running pain free ever since. Tom will be sorrowly missed by his fellow SFAC ( Smiths Falls Athletic Club ) members, as our Charter Western Co-ordinator.
