Obituary of John Orcheston Dean
John Orcheston Dean
February 21, 1928 to July 28, 2014
We are very sad to announce the loss of a much-loved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, John Orcheston Dean, on July 28, 2014, at the age of 86. John was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, went to London, England, as a young man, and met his wife Ankaret on the boat to Canada. They were married almost 60 years, and made their homes, and many friends, in Oakville and McDonalds Corners, Ontario. John was a natural athlete, playing rugby in South Africa (for the Johannesburg Wanderers), tennis in Oakville (where he was tennis director and then president of the Oakville Club) and golf everywhere. His happiest moments were on his sailboat and at High Valley Farm in McDonalds Corners. Educated at Hilton College, South Africa, John qualified as a chartered accountant and worked at Cooper Brothers in London and McDonald Currie in Toronto, before joining Ontario Hydro in 1957. He was assistant treasurer on retiring in 1973, and continued to work in the energy field for many years. He leaves his wife Ankaret, children Joanna (David Wilson), Pippa (Keith Veerman), Louise and Anthony (Ann Anderson), grandchildren Jonathon Moody, Jasmine Georget, Amanda Wilson, Matthew Pedley, Adam Moody, Lucas Wilson, Simon Moody, Basil Veerman, Marlow Wilson, Blake Veerman, Sarah Dean and John Dean, and great-grandchildren, Ankaret, Kaitlin, Russell and Oliver. He was predeceased by his sister, Barbara Hicks, and his parents Jessie and Stanley Dean. We will miss his kindness, sense of humour, independent spirit and fierce love. A celebration of his life will be held at the MERA Schoolhouse in McDonald's Corners at 3 pm on August 16. In lieu of flowers, donations in John's memory can be made to Lanark Animal Welfare Society (lanarkanimals.ca or 613 283 9308).
