Dear Jan and Family,
Our condolences on the loss of your Dad, so unexpected when it looked like he was getting stronger with every day. I know he must have been very proud of his family for the way you were always there when he or your Mom needed help and of course those large family gatherings were most likely the happiest times for everyone. Thank you for always considering Jennifer a member of the family. I know that in her own way she will miss your parents’ presence when visiting Hopetown.
You are all in our thoughts as you prepare to say good-bye.
With all our love,
Jo-Anne & Tony Polen

He was a man of knowledge on anything you wanted to know, just ask him. He and my dad (Alfred Yuill) used to have some long conversations at the store many a time. They both loved history.

My sympathy goes out to Norval's family for their loss but he also leaves a big hole in the community of family history researchers. If someone came to Archives Lanark asking about any families in the vicinity of Hopetown, he was the person we sent them to since he had so much information and was so willing to share. He will be sorely missed.

Our hearts go out to the Wilson family. Norval was the first person to welcome my father when he purchased land in Lanark Highlands in the late 60s. Norval taught him the history and threads in the community. Norval always remembered their chats when I would see him at the Hopetown store. A rare gentleman whose deep relationship to the community will be missed.

To the Wilson Family. We have lost a great historian, story teller, mentor and friend. When we were looking for family info to fill in the blanks of our family trees - the 'Go-To-Guy' was Norval. If you needed to find a grave stone - yup Norval was there to help. If you needed to verify some family info - Noval certainly could clarify any wrongs.... He was a friend to many and Hopetown will certain not be the same with out him. May the stories that you hear over the next few days fill you hearts with pride, your moments with laughter and your memories with love. He will be greatly missed.....

Sincere condolences to all of Norval's family. All who met Norval, were fortunate to have known such a caring man who was such a great historian, story teller and mentor. Norval was thrilled to help me locate my great grandfather's grave and so very proud when I held a special ceremony to install the American Civil War Union soldier gravemarker. He taught us so much about local history, family stories, old homesteads and even taught us how to use divining rods in the cemetery. A special, sincere soul who will be missed by many. I will never forget Norval's sincere kindness. Rest in peace, my friend!

The Cottage
My fondest memories growing up revolved around Uncle Norvals cottage. I spent many weekends in the summers growing up there and have so many memories that I could go on for days. But I think the fondest memory of the cottage was just getting to spend time with Uncle Norval, Aunt Norma, Ruffy, and the rest of the family!

1950's

In the late 50's I 'kept store' for Norval and Norma on Sundays from 9am to closing around 9pm receiving about $10.00 for the day. Good money back then. I recall doing oil changes (draining old oil onto the gravel lot out near the road) while tending to customers in the store. Great memories. After my parents passed on, Norval was my go to person for history of the area. We shared many a laugh. He will be missed. Earl Bowes.

The Check

We were up at the cottage and uncle Norval came to check on us as usual and in his pocket he had his first old age pension check. He asked us what he should do with it, frame it or cash it. We said to frame it , then the goverments books wont balance .He just laughed and gave us that grin of his. He then left to go to lanark lodge to show grama Wilson
