Obituary of Helen Ann MacLeod RN

Helen was the first baby born in Montreal on January 1, 1933. She died peacefully at Peterborough Regional Health Centre on June 29, 2016 in her 83rd year. Helen was dearly loved spouse of Dr. J. Cameron MacLeod for 55 years. She was a devoted Mother of David MacLeod of Toronto (wife Arlena Hebert), Ann MacLeod of Peterborough (husband Desmond Hickie) and Keith MacLeod of Ottawa (wife Annie Lebeau). She loved her six grandchildren Sam & Alexandra, Leah &Fiona, Eric & Corinne. She was daughter of Samuel and Margaret Rose and sister of Donald and Ed. Helen grew up on the Rosayre Farm, Mountain, Ontario. She fondly would recall how on snowy days, her Dad would take her, Donald and Ed to their one room school house in a horse drawn sleigh snuggled in new straw under "the buffalo blanket". In 1955, she graduated as a Registered Nurse at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. Helen was a dashing figure in her new blue 1958 "Volkswagen Bug", which she drove from Ontario to British Columbia three times to be with Cameron. Helen's family often vacationed in Algonquin Park where she first met Cameron with her 1958 Bug at the Harkness Fisheries Research Laboratory at Lake Opeongo where Cam worked as a Masters and PhD student. They married in 1959 and lived in Vancouver, Picton, Richmond Hill, St. Paul Minnesota, Lake Opeongo, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Perth and Peterborough. Helen was well known for her constant care for others. She was a ward nurse, quickly promoted to clinical instructor at the Kingston Hospital. After taking time to raise her children and volunteer with Cubs and Scouts, she re-qualified as nurse working in palliative care and then as a foot care nurse for "her old people" until age 79. With her family, she loved the cottage at Long Lake, her dogs, her bountiful gardens and wild birds. In her final days, Helen said, "I'm ready" and "God loves us".
