It would be hard to express the importance of Stuart's work at the CHRC, for example to persons disabled by environmental sensitivities. He led others at the CHRC in approaching the federal health department about attitudes and awareness, and by including sensitivities in CHRC's compliance work.

I have just learned of Stuart's passing. He was quite ill at the end and so his death was not a surprise, but it was nonetheless a shock. I had the great privilege of working with Stuart at the Canadian Human Rights Commission for several years and was a regular, if infrequent, golf companion over the years since. I like to think that I was a friend. I am of course saddened by Stuart's death, no matter its inevitability. I am most saddened by the fact that so few will know of his contribution to Canada with both the Official Languages Commission and the Human Rights Commission. The mere fact that he was such a pivotal member of both demonstrates his deep commitment to social justice. But only those who worked with him will know how important his contributions were. Believe me, they were monumental. Others will undoubtedly have mentioned his prodigious intellect, his masterful linguistic abilities and his great artistic talent. He was a man to be envied! But those gifts do not define him; what does is his common goodness. He was a man unlike others but who truly treated others with kindness and understanding. I will miss our talks and shared memories. I will miss him.

I will always remember Uncle Stuart as a kind-hearted, generous man with a quick wit and quirky sense of humour. Like my cousin Jessica, I think back to many Christmas gatherings over the years, especially the quiz games we all used to enjoy after Christmas dinner! June and Stuart were always very kind to us kids. I will miss him. Condolences to all the Beaty family.

Dear June and Family, Please accept our sincere sympathy to you all on the loss of this generous man, Stuart. Stuart volunteered for many years at High Horizons, teaching others to paint, participating in a variety of activities and generally being his wonderful self. He will be missed by many, but his beautiful paintings will keep reminding us all what a fine man he was, With love, Cor and Carla Baars

I am writing on behalf of my mom Jessie Rose who wanted me to pass on her condolences to Stuart's family and I will certainly do that. We talked about a phone call that she remembers having with Stuart and how they had such a nice conversation. We talked about June and the celebration of Stuart's life that will be happening on Friday. I enjoyed reading Jessica's comments about her memories of Christmas. When I think of Stuart I also think of the many big family gatherings we used to hold at Christmas and other special times. We always had lots of good food and laughter and even the occasional bridge game. Stuart was a very fine bridge player in addition to the many other talents that have already been mentioned. I will treasure the art pieces that he has given me over the years, most recently one called "Running Wild". Barb

I remember the Christmases at Uncle Stuart and Aunt June's place. They had those icicle decorations on their tree that I loved so much. They reminded me of water. Every place we used to go to at christmas was so special in its own way. June and Stuart's place was always on the list of Christmas outings and I was always excited to go. I loved Stuart's sense of humour - even as a little girl. It was always harder to find toys to play with at their place but we always had fun. We loved to play outside - it was a new and exciting playground. I loved playing in the snow. I remember some stairs for some reason that led to the outside. Funny what you remember as a little person. My young life was richer having known Stuart. He will be missed. Love to June.

My uncle Stuart passed away at the age of 84, survived by his wife June. He was quite unwell, however the recent deterioration and loss has left me with a heavy heart. I have fond memories from the small pockets of time (he lived in Canada, I in the UK mainly): From Stuart bouncing a 9m old Sam on his knee at our house in Cambridge in 2002, to coaching me to ‘only use a big brush’ during an informal watercolour-painting workshop in the Lake District 2011, to his lamenting the hopelessness of Trump and Brexit when we spoke just a couple of weeks ago (as I was on my way home from work - thinking he would probably admire the changing colours in the sunset I was watching as we spoke). Somehow the sum of these interactions is much greater than the few hours and days they add up to, as if something were given... Stuart was both formidably achieving yet gently modest. His painting was an inspiration to me. His last day was spent with his sister (my mum, who has done an amazing thing, being there with him in his last weeks) and friends, sharing gifts, words and songs - including a ‘farewell’ song. Nobody knew it was his last day. I understand it was moving but lovely.

I will miss Stuart. I will miss his quirky English style and humour, not to mention his artistic and intellectual talents. The last time we were together, despite his lung trouble, we had a long discussion about world politics and recent events - he was as sharp and insightful as ever, despite knowing his health was declining rapidly. His main concern was not for himself but for his wife June. That spirit and those times will be remembered.

I first met Stuart when we were at school together during the 1940s. Fundamentally, he never changed his optimistic, kindly disposition, character features that were accompanied by a quick and deep intelligence. He was an accomplished actor and we both appeared in school productions together - he as Captain Bluntschli and I as Major Saranoff in "Arms and the Man" and he as Captain Absolute and I as Bob Acres in "The Rivals". Bluntschli is a self-deprecating realist with a perceptive eye for humbug and pretentiousness, so you might say that he was type-cast to an extent. He was thoroughly entertaining company and he and a few of us formed a strong bond, gradually loosened by the passage of many years, but as strong as ever in memory. As I write, I feel it.
