Why I will always remember Auntie Barb
It was a summer long, long ago when I was just a little lad. Well, I guess it wasn't that long ago. I was around 6 years, 11 months and a couple of days old. My sister, Shannon, and I were visiting Grandpa Slack in Smith Falls. I think Shannon and I were a little too much for Grandpa one evening, so Auntie Barb decided to take us to the movies. Oh, were we excited. It was 1984 and we had the choice between Karate Kid and Gremlins. I made my vote for Karate Kid but was quickly vetoed by Shannon and especially Barb. Remember now, I was only 6 at the time. I voiced my concerns about Gremlins and said it might be a scary movie. Barb insisted it was a children's movie. "How can a movie with cute dolls be scary?" At that time, you based your choice of movie by the poster at the movie theater. Oh MAN!!! Was it scary. I was so scared, I watched the entire movie through the gaps in my fingers. Remember now, I was only 6. Both Auntie Barb and Shannon had to provide comfort throughout the entire movie. I screamed and wished we would just leave, but we didn't and we made it to the end. The lessons that I learned: First of all, never let your stuffed animal get wet, they may turn into Gremlins. Secondly, face your fears head on, if you give up, you'll always be disappointed. To this day, every time I watch a scary movie I think of Auntie Barb. Oh yeah, and I still scream and watch them through my fingers. Thinking of you always and you will be missed. Love Stephen
