Obituary of David Edward Hill Q.C.

Hill, David Edward Q.C., David, formerly of Toronto, passed away in his sleep in the early hours of March 10, 2015 at the age of 82. He spent his final days in comfort, surrounded by his family, at the Great War Memorial Hospital, Perth, Ontario, less than ten miles from his favourite place in the whole world, his home at Christie Lake. He was a son, a brother, a genius, a daredevil, an outdoorsman, a boxer, a geologist, an astronomer, an inventor, a lawyer, a husband, a father, a grandfather, a patriarch, a mentor and a loyal friend to all who knew him. David is predeceased by his parents Edward and Jessie (née McKinnon) Hill, his wife Marilyn (née Anderson) Hill and their son Daniel. David will be sorely missed by his sons Michael (Marlene Koot) and Douglas, his granddaughters Karen and Alix, his sister Margot (Bohdan Wojciechowski), his brother Gordon, their families, and every member of David's extended family. He will be remembered fondly by the many people he touched in both his personal life and professional career. After a remarkable high school and university performance David graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School and was called to the bar in Ontario in 1958. From then until his retirement in 1996, he practiced law with the firm of Holmested Sutton in downtown Toronto where his father, George Edward Hill Q.C., and later David's brother, Gordon Leonard Hill Q.C., also practiced. Over the years he served his clients with honesty and integrity specializing in the areas of Corporate, Commercial, Real Estate, Mining and Probate law. Prior to his retirement, he served the firm as Senior Partner and later as Associate Counsel. During his career, he served as a director/officer of many Canadian corporations and also served on the boards of several venerable institutions including North York General Hospital, The Speech and Stuttering Institute (formerly the Ontario Speech Foundation), The Canadian Catalysis Foundation, The Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council of Canada, and the IODE Children's Hospital. Services are private for the family. In the summer of 2003 David made the move he had planned for his entire career. He sold his home of forty years in Toronto and moved into his cottage at Christie Lake to enjoy his retirement. Surrounded by his woods, his lake, his family and the families that he and his parents had grown up with, David was exactly where he wanted to be. He is remembered by all around the lake for his open door, his ready hand, his commitment to the Christie Lake Association (which he served diligently as Secretary for many years), his love of maple syrup, his homemade wine and the many piles of sticks that adorn his twenty-three acres. In lieu of the traditional visitation and funeral, a celebration of David's life will be held at his home at Christie Lake on Sunday August 2, 2015 from 1:00 to 5:00 PM. All family members, friends and/or acquaintances are welcome. Should you wish to attend then please bring only your memories.
