Joan and I worked together for many years at the Lanark County Interval House Outreach Office - called 'Vera's'. It was a treat to work with Joan - her commitment, her sense of humour, her elegance (even wearing As Good As New clothing), and her cooking - always presented in an elegant fashion. I have many of Joan's recipes - but they never look as good as when Joan made them.
I've used the word elegant many times and it fits Joan perfectly. We Interval House staff were a motley group - and Joan's elegant perfection was always a delight to see. And the cigarette holder just added to her charm.
I am in Victoria and will sadly miss the memorial.
But I will joyfully make a donation to Lanark County Interval House in her name. My sincere sympathy to her sister and her lovely children and grandchildren.

To Andrew, Jonathon, Mary Caroline
This is my second attempt to e-mail this to you. So you may get two messages. I do want you to know that I am so sorry to learn of Joan's death. She was a beautiful woman--gracious, kind, loved to entertain, and I have many memories of parties and family gatherings on Perkins Drive. I recall the time when JONATHON and I shared a birthday there.
We all share your loss but we all have many wonderful memories many of which have been racing across my mind as I attempt to send this to you.
Much love,
Eleanor (cousin)
The weather and my 82 years have prevented me from being with you tonight and tomorrow.

I had the pleasure of working with Joan at Vera's when I first started at LCIH. At that time it was just Joan and I at Vera's. Being new and nervous Joan gave me the most wonderful introduction to the history of LCIH and women's issues in Lanark County. We had many great conversations about our work peppered with home baking; fashion lessons; and stories from her childhood on the farm. I learned so much from this classy lady. My condolences to her children, grandchildren, and extended family.

I had the joy of working with Joan for 13 years. Wonderful woman! We fondly nicknamed her " the bag lady" as she often came to work with bags of beautiful clothing for the clients of LCIH. She will be missed.

The world will be a greyer place without Joan. I worked with her for many years and always appreciated her elegance, and grace, that encapsulated one of the more determined women I've known. Her courage under Fire, and love of life was something to behold, admire, and emulate. Condolences to all who will miss her. Rest in peace Joan.

Dear Andrew, Jonathan, Mary Caroline, and ‘all’ the family,
I was deeply saddened to learn of dear Joan’s passing. I am so sorry for your loss and for her illness that took her too early. Your loss IS monumental as you bid farewell to an adoring Mother; ‘Amah’; mother-in-law; sister; sister-in-law and cherished aunt. She was a matriarch like none other and her memory and life’s footprint will last forever.
To me, she will always be remembered as a dear friend and mentor. She was a wonderful role model, and I loved her and dear Bill very much. My favourite memories go back to ‘babysitting’ days on Burchell Boulevard - our many chats, my first glass of wine, and our wedding (well over 40 years ago). Joan oozed elegance, grace and beauty through every pore of her body. I still have her handwritten note in The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran. I have said a prayer for dear Joanie, and it comforts me to know she is singing with the Angels and reunited with her loved ones.
I am sorry we missed the ‘sharing of memories and laughter’ – we were away and unaware. I would have loved to contribute to the laughter portion of the gathering. I shall visit her instead at Elmwood.
With love and sincere condolences, Pauline and Greg

Remembering Great Aunt Joan
My Great Aunt Joan will always be remembered for her elegance and grace. I have fond memories of family gatherings at Uncle Bill and Aunt Joan's house; great conversations, great food and I always admired her beautiful fine china (perhaps maybe where my love of it came from...). I also remember those hot summer days swimming in their pool and splashing away with our other cousins and family members. These memories are just a few to note. I am so honoured to be a Great Niece of Joan, knowing her hard work and dedication to her family and for her involvement with Lanark Interval House; she is truly an admiration for generations. We will miss you Aunt Joan, may you Rest In Peace now. Love always, Kelsey
