My grandfather W.J. MacPhail was a teacher; his first school was #9 Dalhousie in 1898. Irene found the school's records and held them for me for one of my infrequent visits to the Archives. The records showed that her father had attended the school at that time. Irene was most helpful and gracious. I offer my condolences to the family. Chris MacPhail

So sorry to hear this sad news. I will always remember visiting the farm as a young girl and was fascinated with the guinea pigs in the kitchen, memories of dancing or singing for our Halloween treats and of course that crazy pony Gypsy who gave me more than one wild ride while she was on loan to our farm. She was a loving welcoming neighbour and leaves a big hole in a lot of hearts.

Dear Dave, Susan, Ann, Sheila, Lori and all your families,
Our whole community has lost a treasure with the passing of your mom. I’d like to share a little memory that illustrates her thoughtfulness and her connection to people.
I was just learning how to do genealogical research and was looking for some obscure information. I met Irene at the Archives. She patiently went over some basic genealogical research procedures. In a side discussion, she told me about a book that she was helping to research about the War of 1812. I told her that my husband’s ancestor, John De Cou, had been an officer in the war and had been captured and escaped. It was to his home that Laura Secord brought the message to Lieutenant James FitzGibbon, who was bivouacked at De Cou’s home, that the Americans were planning an attack. Irene listened patiently to all this.
About 6 months later, I made my way back to the Archives for another search. Irene was there and she had something for me. She explained that they were digitizing many of the books that they had stored there at the Archives and that she had found an extensive account of the De Cou family in one of the books. After scanning the book, she had torn out the pages relating to the De Cou’s and held them there for me, even though she had no way of knowing if I’d ever be back. I was amazed that she had kept those details somewhere in her memory and connected my little story to the passage in an obscure little history book. But to her, it was just a matter of course.
What a wonderful lady, you can be sure she will be missed in this community.

My condolences to all Irene's family. When growing up on our farm in Drummond Twp. Irene and David were our very good next door neighbors. I even babysat a few times although I had no formal training. I lost touch over the years but reconnected with Irene and she was a big help with my family tree. Love my copy of the North Elmsley book and will think of Irene every time I reference it. May she rest in peace, she's had such a busy and wonderful life.

It is always a shock to hear of the death of such a strong, feisty & engaged woman - someone who was both family and close friend to my parents, and well-known to me also, over the years. My deepest sympathies go out to all her family. She was truly a force of Nature - someone well loved and well-rounded, and will be deeply missed. Thinking of you all and sending prayers for comfort at this sad time.

My deepest sympathy to all members of Irene's family. I got to know Irene through Archives Lanark where she was a dedicated volunteer for so many years. She was a real historian and if you had a question, you were almost sure that Irene knew the answer. She was so knowledgeable that she was able to link me with my maternal grandfather's family who still live in the county. She was a real treasure and will be sorely missed by everyone who had the pleasure of meeting her. Rest in Peace Irene.

Dear Charlie, David, Susan, Anne, Sheila, Lori and all the Spence and Umpherson families. "A life well lived", has no true meaning than to describe our dear Irene. She did it all, said it all and left her mark and a wonderful legacy to her family (all of us) and to her community. If we only could have "cloned" her. She has left us all with such wonderful memories of family times spent together. If you don't have one you didn't know and love her like I did, because I can't begin to count them all and will treasure each one, even the phone conversations.
To you, her dear loved ones as you say your, "see you later", you are in our thoughts and prayers at this very sad and emotional time. May Irene be piped into heaven today as the sun shines brightly. Love and Big Hugs to all xoxoxo Elaine and Bob and family

Sending sincere condolences to everyone in the Spence family at this sad time. My father, Murray Coutts, always enjoyed his chats with your mother. They spent many hours discussing the history of their townships and Lanark County, which your mother was so proud of. She did a fantastic job putting the archives of Drummond and North Elmsley townships together. Prayers to all at this difficult time.

While her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren will feel her passing most, Irene's passing is a great loss felt by our community writ large. But just as she will live on through her descendants, she will live on through her work of decades toward safeguarding the history of Drummond/North Elmsley Township, Lanark County and beyond. Irene was a dedicated and exacting historian and future generations will be the beneficiaries of her efforts. Our condolences to her family and all who knew her - Ron & Love Shaw
