Penny, Angela, Mike, Miranda & the rest of your family,
I didn’t know Doug well, but he was the CO of 598 Sqn when I joined the Air Cadets in Cobourg 30 years ago. His dedication to, and mentorship of, Canada’s youth over so many decades is amazing and inspiring. It is due to people such as Doug that so many young people go on to dedicate their careers to serving our fine country, and I’m not sure you could count the number of people whose lives were benefited by Doug’s dedication and influence.
Beyond his volunteer activities, the loss of a husband, father, brother, grandpa, uncle and friend is significant to all of those who loved him. Especially in times of Covid where people can’t fully come together to comfort each other through this loss.
So, to Penny, Mike, Miranda & Angela, I send my virtual hugs. I wish I could be there in person to pass on my condolences to you and your families.

First of all, my condolences to Penny, Mike, and all of the family on the sudden loss of Doug. He was truly one of the kindest men I have ever known. During my years in Air Cadets Doug was a role model and an important guiding voice during a difficult time in my life. I know that many others who served with him would have similar things to say. I had enjoyed reconnecting over the past few years online and will miss these interactions as well. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of his family who are grieving at this time.

Doug was a great mentor and leader, teaching some sometimes subtle lessons that took years for we teenagers to fully absorb and appreciate. He was my training officer for 2 years in Cobourg in the late 80s. He showed kindness and patience and flexibility. He adapted the training for some special circumstances - he didn't have a one-size-fits-all approach; he taught each of us in the way we would best learn. He gave me some good advice I followed to my benefit, and some good advice I pridefully didn't follow which I've learned to take as a lesson even 30 years later. He taught me my instructional technique courses and my public speaking, skills which paid off a hundred times in the years that followed, opening roads in life I would never have otherwise gotten. And he oversaw my leadership training and most of all gave me the chance to practice it. I don't know where I would be without those gifts. I owe a lot to him and to Penny and the team of officers they assembled at 598 squadron, probably more than I'll ever remember or understand. Thank you, Doug.

To the Irish family,
My heart felt condolences on the loss of such an incredible and impactful person as kind and caring as Doug. I have personally known Doug since I was a teenager when he was my Unit’s RCA. Later on as an adult I had the opportunity to work along side him during several very positive summers in CFB Trenton.
As I reflect upon the many wonderful memories of the time we had shared together one of the things that really stands out for me is how he never missed an opportunity to share and impart his knowledge and wisdom. Always so humble and positive, such an incredible role model.
I truly hope that you can find some joy in the long lasting positive impact that he has made in so many lives.
All our love,
Mike & Susan Blakely-Bazinet

I can vouch for Doug's mentorship of youth personally. Five years in 598 Sabre Squadron, Air Cadets, Cobourg, ON was a formative time in my life, helping me to choose my career with the RCAF. Even 28 years later I still apply certain lessons-learned from Doug (and Penny) in the military with Junior Officers. Four of us in Ottawa still maintain close contact from those Air Cadet days that Doug and Penny fostered, and all of us successful and happy. Without a man and Officer like Doug, my future may have been different. I am so happy that I met him, learned under him, and could pay my respects at his retirement ceremony.
One picture is of him leading the 598 Sabre Squadron marching band in one of many Christmas parades around 1989.
The other is of three of the four of us showing the variety of our paths in 1993. I was at Military College, Bill retired Air Cadets as the Chief Warrant Officer, and Derek had joined the Cadet Officer Corps.
I will miss him, his family will miss him, his Squadron will miss him, his community will miss him, but I take my comfort in knowing that the lessons he taught me have been passed down to those I have mentored, and it will continue.

With over 40 plus years of friendship we have created many memories together ...some good times..some not so good ...some happy time and some sad times .We have shared many laughs together and supported each other whenever any of us was in need over the years. Sure wish we were closer now at your difficult time. Doug was certainly one of the kindest, giving and gentle men I have ever known . One memory that stands out (among our many) is all the "air cadet" times we shared together....I am sure that George greeted Doug with a salute as two friends reunited once again . Those memories are special and so thankful that we have some of Doug..you and the kids ..They mean more now than they ever have . I am here for you Pen.....dont hesitate ...Love to all xoxo .......Debbie Hackney and family .

What a lovely man, Doug was always eager to help with whatever issue you had. He supported me and the 608 Duke of Edinburgh Sqn in Belleville, ON during my time there and he was always a welcomed face to see walk through those armoury doors. A genuine and gentle soul, he will be truly missed.

I had the pleasure of knowing Doug (Maj Irish to me) through the cadet program, and had the distinct pleasure of having him as my Regional Cadet Advisor in my last year a CO with the 58 Squadron Air Cadets in Kingston. There was never a time where I ever saw him without a smile on his face, and kind and well thought out advice for cadets and junior officers alike.
Maj (Ret'd) Irish - Doug, will be long remembered by hundreds of cadets, civilian volunteers and officers in the Canadian Cadet Organization.
On behalf of Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps St Lawrence in Kingston, our sincere condolences to Penny and the family.
RIP Sir - you will be missed.
