I was lucky enough to have the Thompson family as neighbours in Peterborough. We had so much fun and he had a huge heart. This past fall we re-connected and of course he made me laugh. I was so looking forward to more texts, more talks --- unfortunately that will not happen but what I learned from him -- enjoy everyday, smile and never give up. My sincere sympathy to his family. You are all in my thoughts.
Words can not express our surprise and sorry to hear of Derrick's passing. What a special Nephew he was. He played hockey with our son and we had to cheer for both boys. While he lived out west Derrick was wonderful to our Son and Daughter-in-law when they went to visit our Grandson who worked there for a short time. Vi, Jim, Darren, Deb, Kelly, his children Steven, Ryan, Grandchildren Alec and Liam we extend our most sincere condolences. His Nieces and Nephews we are thinking of you all, stay safe and healthy. I was fortunate to be one of the lucky few who have called Derrick a good friend for well over 40 years... we have enjoyed late night phone calls for decades... there were no secrets... shared great memories from our youth, including the years that Derrick resided in an apartment in my mother's house... like most of us Derrick wasn't perfect... he could be hard on himself (being a Viking's fan as an example... lol)... but those of us that knew him well, knew that he genuinely cared about people... his heart was in the right place and he had a great sense of humor... Derrick had that rare ability to make new friends effortlessly... his candor earned him trust almost immediately from others... I'm so sorry that I missed his last late night call to me just 2 days before he passed, but I'm grateful that we were able to get together several times in these past 3 years or so, since Derrick returned from the west... this is the 3rd loss that our friendship clan has suffered in the past 6 months and as catastrophic as this has been, I take some comfort imagining that wherever our buddies are now, they are amidst friends... to all of Derrick's family and extended family, I wish you love and light...
