Passed away peacefully surrounded by the love and support of his family at Lanark Lodge, on Wednesday, February 7, 2024 at the age of 90. Beloved husband and best friend for more than 42 years of the late Margaret Shanks (nee McVeigh). Loving and devoted father of Beth Shanks (Bruce Parks), Judy Bryan, Sharon Derrett (Jim Pattemore) and Betty Shanks (David Parks) and the late Corrine Shanks. Richard will be sadly missed by his 9 grandchildren – Robbie and Wesley Spoelder, Mary Davis, Ann-Marie Allan, Vicki Bryan, Shawn Shanks, Jamie Derrett, Augusta Rowsome, and Makayla Parks. As well he will be missed by his 16 great-grandchildren. Richard is pre-deceased by grandson Devin Rowsome and his two great-grandchildren Damien and Maya, and his sister Betty Shanks, also loving niece Penny. He was also a great friend and partner of Joan Nicholson. Richard and Margaret were proud to start the Shank’s Group Home for high functioning residents for 22 years. Having 11 members, they became a part of their family. He loved family gatherings, enjoying a meal with loved ones and travelling throughout the world. Friends may pay their respects at Blair & Son Funeral Home, Smiths Falls on Friday, February 16, 2024 from 6 to 8 p.m. There will be a Legion Service for Legion members and the family at 5:30 p.m. A service to celebrate Richard’s life, and service to his country will take place Saturday, February 17 at 11 a.m. Private interment will take place at St. Francis de Sales Cemetery at a later date. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
