Obituary of John William Storie

Storie, John William

John William Storie in his 85th year passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family, at the Perth Hospital on Friday, October 25, 2024.

John's beloved wife Grace, his daughter Susan (Glen) and son David will miss him dearly.  They are truly grateful for the legacy he leaves behind and the memories of so many wonderful times spent together.

John was the 2nd oldest of 9 children born to Wallace and Annie Storie of Lanark, Ontario.  He will be remembered and missed by his sisters Lorna, Sharon (Earl Donaldson), his brothers Donnie and Rodney (Denise McNamee), brother-in-law Gary Munro, sisters-in-law Darleen Sargeant and Janet Storie and Grace's family:  sisters Anne, Bernice (Tom Cox), Joyce (Wayne King), brothers Don (Ada), Frank, sisters-in-law Ethelmary and Beth, and brother-in-law Ron Oakey.  Uncle John was a favourite among his many nieces & nephews within the Storie family and Grace's Newfoundland family. He always had time for the young ones and could bring a smile to their face with little effort... his stories will be remembered always.

He was predeceased by his parents, son-in-law Mark, sister Marlene, sister Eunice, brothers Rayburn & Keith, brothers-in-law Doug Cordick, Russell Deachman and sister-in-law Judy Storie.  John was also predeceased by his brothers-in-law Pat, George & Gordon Skinner, sisters-in-law Theresa Fitzgerald and Lizzie Oakey, brother-in-law John Vallis and nephews Jamie Oakey, Justin Skinner and niece Susie Strickland - all of Newfoundland.

John left the village of Lanark when he was 18 years old to enroll in the Royal Canadian Navy. He spent 5 years based out of Halifax, NS.  After meeting and marrying Grace (Skinner) from Newfoundland, he received his honourable discharge from the Navy and they relocated to Perth.  John & Grace celebrated their 61st Wedding Anniversary in the spring of 2024.  Over the past days he shared how proud he was of his family and how much he adored Grace and was proud of the life they had together.  John had a love for country music, bluegrass music and yes, some good Newfoundland jigs & reels too!!

John was loved and respected by his family, friends and community.  When he first returned to Perth he worked at Burchell Supply.  He then went on to work for the International Silver Co / Heritage Silversmiths for approx. 40 years.  Eventually he worked alongside his very good friend, Preston Laming for a number of years doing lawn maintenance and snow removal, until he fully retired.

He was a coach for both minor baseball and hockey here in Perth with David playing on the teams he coached.  He was an avid baseball and hockey fan and a big supporter of Junior Hockey, including the Perth Blue Wings!

He loved the outdoors, specifically the Lanark Highlands, and he enjoyed hunting and fishing for many years with his brothers, nephews, and a group of fellas where dad eventually became the only elder.  These young fellas did everything possible to keep dad in the sport until he was no longer able to go.  (you know who you are - smile).

John followed in the footsteps of his own father with a natural ability to cultivate amazing vegetable and flower gardens.  He was always tinkering around doing something at his work bench or in the yard.... and he would drop everything to spend a few moments to visit and chat... a genuine friend to many.

Grace, Susan & David extend their sincere thanks to Dr. James Simpson, the doctors, nurses and the palliative care team on 2nd floor, Perth Hospital for their compassionate care for John over the past few weeks.

Friends are invited to visit with the family at the Blair & Son Funeral Home, 15 Gore St. W. Perth on Saturday, November 2nd, 2024, from 2:00pm - 7:00pm.
