Robert John Hassard (1946- 2012) It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Bob Hassard, in the arms of his beloved wife, Wendy, who was the light of his life. Bob was the son of the late Jack & Margaret Hassard, and dearly loved son-in-law of the late Wilma and Horace Allison. Bob is survived by his brother Jamie, and brother-in-law Dean Allison. Bob was a cherished uncle to Courtney and Michael (Michelle) Allison. Bob grew up in Brampton. After high school he attended Waterloo Lutheran University and then the Ontario College of Education. He taught in Toronto for the North York Board of Education at Bayview, Fisherville, and Pierre Laporte Junior High Schools, and ultimately Downsview Secondary School. Bob was a talented teacher and a treasured colleague. He consistently demonstrated an amazing generosity of spirit, always making time to help others. His sense of humour, optimism and constructive outlook were invaluable to his colleagues. Bob taught English and Physical Education for many years, but his greatest joy was teaching English As A Second Language. His sheer joy of living, together with his caring personality, will be remembered by both staff and students. Throughout his life, he faced overwhelming health challenges, after being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 19, and most recently with colon cancer. He always met life’s challenges and adversity with extraordinary dignity, courage, grace and most importantly, a positive spirit. When Bob stepped into a room, an ordinary group of people became a party. He was a "walking celebration of life.” To be around him was a joy. It was a privilege to be his friend. In 2000 Bob retired, and he and Wendy built a home in Perth. He immediately began curling and cross country skiing. He loved retirement in his new community, especially since it was now only 12 minutes to his much loved cottage. Bob was a talented home handyman, who loved to help his friends and neighbours. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. A huge light has gone out in all of our lives! At Bob’s request, there will be no visitation or funeral. The family will hold a celebration of his life in the summer, when his ashes will be scattered over his beloved Otty Lake.
