It is with great sorrow that the family announces the passing of William Earl Umpherson on Friday, August 24th, 2012 in the presence of his family in hospital in Perth. He leaves behind his loving wife Jane of 67 years and children, Richard, Alyson, Jim, Charles and Rahel. He was predeceased by a wonderful daughter Rhian. Born to William and Frances (nee Davidson) Umpherson on December 4, 1918 he received his education at Ladore and Lanark High school. After a couple of years working at the family lumber mill in Poland Ontario he joined the RCAF on December 4, 1941. Earl flew as Captain on Halifax bombers with 502 "Ulster Squadron" and he received the Croix de Guerre (France) for action in the Bay of Biscay 13th August, 1944. He returned to Canada with his bride Jane (Jenkins) a Navy WRNS who had served in the frontline port of Dover during the war years. The following years Earl and family lived in Poland, Herrons Mill, the French Line, Waba and Drummond Centre. Earl was a lumberman, he loved the bush and working in the trade; cutting, hauling, sawing and milling. He was an outstanding member of the community and is greatly missed by all. He is especially loved by his sister Irene Spence and brother Charles Umpherson. Predeceased by sisters Gladys Millar, Dorothy Ireton, Esther Jackson and brother Arthur Umpherson. Friends may pay their respects at the Blair and Son Funeral Home, 15 Gore St. W., Perth on Tuesday, August 28th, 2012 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. The funeral service in celebration of Earl's life will be held in the Chapel on Wednesday at 10:30 A.M. followed by a reception in the Blair & Son Family Centre. Interment will the take place in White Cemetery, Poland. In remembrance, contributions the Great War Memorial Hospital Foundation would be appreciated.
